Switzerland's insurance landscape is unlike any other country. Health insurance is mandatory — but you choose the insurer. Pillar 3a is voluntary — but it is the single most powerful legal tax deduction available. Avenzo is the only FINMA-registered platform connecting insurance comparison directly with tax optimization.
Health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland under the Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal). Every person residing in Switzerland must enroll within three months of arrival — including expats.
What you must know:
Annual premium ranges, Canton Zurich, adult (2025):

Pillar 3a (Säule 3a — tied private pension) allows every person with earned income subject to AHV contributions to deduct up to CHF 7258 per year (2025, employees with a pension fund) from taxable income. This includes expats with B, C, G, and L permits.
The math at a 25% marginal tax rate:
Pillar 3a funds can be invested in savings accounts, funds, or ETFs — and the income remains tax-free until withdrawal.
Pillar 2 (BVG — Federal Law on Occupational Retirement, Survivors' and Disability Pension Plans) is mandatory for all employees earning above CHF 22050 per year. Contributions are split between employer and employee.
Key situations for expats:
Life insurance in Switzerland serves two purposes: risk protection and savings. In the context of Pillar 3a, a life insurance policy with a savings component (gemischte Lebensversicherung) can replace a bank-based 3a account — with the advantage of combining a death benefit and a guaranteed savings plan.
Types:
| Insurance | What it covers | Indicative monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Dental insurance | Dental treatments — not covered by basic health insurance | CHF 15–80 |
| Supplementary health insurance | Semi-private or private hospital ward, alternative medicine | CHF 50–400 |
| Household contents insurance | Furniture, electronics, personal belongings | CHF 10–30 |
| Personal liability insurance | Damages you cause to third parties | CHF 5–15 |
| Accident insurance | Supplements mandatory occupational accident cover (UVG) | Employer-dependent |
