07FAQ

Fragen zu Versicherungen

01Is health insurance mandatory in Switzerland?
Yes. Under the Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal), every resident — including expats with B, G, L, or C permits — must enroll in basic health insurance within three months of arrival. Coverage is retroactive to the registration date. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) supervises premium approval.
02How much can I deduct in Pillar 3a per year?
For employees with a pension fund (Pillar 2/BVG), the maximum 2025 contribution is CHF 7258 per year, fully deductible from taxable income. Self-employed without a pension fund can contribute up to 20% of net income, max CHF 36288/year. B permit holders must file a NOV (subsequent ordinary assessment) to claim this deduction.
03Can I keep my Swiss pension when I leave Switzerland?
It depends on your destination. If you move to a non-EU/EFTA country, you can withdraw your full Pillar 2 capital. Within EU/EFTA, only the overobligatory portion is paid out — the BVG mandatory portion stays in Switzerland until retirement age, unless covered by a specific bilateral agreement.
04What is the difference between basic and supplementary health insurance?
Basic health insurance (KVG) is mandatory and provides identical coverage at all approved insurers — defined by federal law (BAG). Supplementary insurance (VVG) is voluntary and covers benefits like semi-private/private hospital wards, alternative medicine, and dental treatment. Supplementary insurers can decline applications based on health questions, while basic KVG must accept all applicants.

FINMA-Registered · Neutral Comparison · No Sales Pressure · English Support

Switzerland's insurance landscape is unlike any other country. Health insurance is mandatory — but you choose the insurer. Pillar 3a is voluntary — but it is the single most powerful legal tax deduction available. Avenzo is the only FINMA-registered platform connecting insurance comparison directly with tax optimization.

Health Insurance (Krankenkasse) — Mandatory for All Residents

Health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland under the Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal). Every person residing in Switzerland must enroll within three months of arrival — including expats.

What you must know:

  • All approved insurers offer identical basic coverage (the law defines what is covered)
  • Premiums vary significantly between insurers, cantons, and age groups
  • The annual deductible (franchise) ranges from CHF 300 (minimum) to CHF 2,500 (maximum) — a higher deductible means lower premiums
  • The switching deadline is November 30 each year (for changes effective January 1)

Annual premium ranges, Canton Zurich, adult (2025):

Plan Lowest premium Highest premium
CHF 300 franchise, standard model ~CHF 380/month ~CHF 610/month
CHF 2,500 franchise, standard model ~CHF 265/month ~CHF 430/month

Pillar 3a — The Most Powerful Tax Deduction in Switzerland

Pillar 3a (Säule 3a — tied private pension) allows every person with earned income subject to AHV contributions to deduct up to CHF 7258 per year (2025, employees with a pension fund) from taxable income. This includes expats with B, C, G, and L permits.

The math at a 25% marginal tax rate:

  • Annual contribution: CHF 7258
  • Tax saving: approximately CHF 1,815 per year
  • Over 20 years (with investment returns): potentially CHF 60,000+ in combined tax savings and investment growth

Pillar 3a funds can be invested in savings accounts, funds, or ETFs — and the income remains tax-free until withdrawal.

→ Pillar 3a guide

Pillar 2 — Occupational Pension (Pensionskasse)

Pillar 2 (BVG — Federal Law on Occupational Retirement, Survivors' and Disability Pension Plans) is mandatory for all employees earning above CHF 22050 per year. Contributions are split between employer and employee.

Key situations for expats:

  • Job change: Your pension capital must be transferred to a vested benefits account (Freizügigkeitskonto) or your new employer's pension fund
  • Leaving Switzerland: You can withdraw your Pillar 2 capital when leaving the country (within EU/EFTA: only the mandatory portion is paid out; the rest remains in a vested benefits account until retirement age)
  • Voluntary buy-in: Purchasing additional pension fund coverage is tax-deductible and a powerful planning tool

→ Pension fund guide

Life Insurance

Life insurance in Switzerland serves two purposes: risk protection and savings. In the context of Pillar 3a, a life insurance policy with a savings component (gemischte Lebensversicherung) can replace a bank-based 3a account — with the advantage of combining a death benefit and a guaranteed savings plan.

Types:

  • Term life insurance (Risikoversicherung): Pure death benefit — protects your family and mortgage. Premiums are low.
  • Endowment life insurance: Risk protection combined with guaranteed savings. Can be structured as a Pillar 3a product.
  • Unit-linked life insurance: Investment risk and life cover combined — higher potential returns, higher risk.

Additional Insurance Products

Insurance What it covers Indicative monthly cost
Dental insurance Dental treatments — not covered by basic health insurance CHF 15–80
Supplementary health insurance Semi-private or private hospital ward, alternative medicine CHF 50–400
Household contents insurance Furniture, electronics, personal belongings CHF 10–30
Personal liability insurance Damages you cause to third parties CHF 5–15
Accident insurance Supplements mandatory occupational accident cover (UVG) Employer-dependent

Why Insurance and Tax Belong Together

Avenzo connects your insurance data directly to your tax return:

  1. Health insurance premiums → automatically claimed as a deduction
  2. Pillar 3a contributions → transferred directly to your tax return
  3. Life insurance premiums → insurance deduction (flat rate or actual amount)

This integration means you never forget a deduction that your insurance generates.

→ File your tax return with insurance deductions

FINMA Registration and Insurance Advice

Insurance intermediaries in Switzerland must be registered under the Insurance Supervision Act (VAG). Avenzo holds a FINMA license — which means:

  • No hidden commissions: All remuneration models are disclosed
  • Neutral comparison: No binding relationships with individual insurers
  • Regulated advice: Minimum quality standards for all recommendations
  • Complaints body: FINMA as the independent supervisory authority
